Your Life, Your Story (GWTW323)

Is your life your story? I start this episode reflecting upon a quote from Art, Inc.: The Essential Guide for Building Your Career as an Artist by Lisa Congdon that stopped me in my tracks. I never believed that I had an interesting story. I often don’t share it as a result. But the truth is that it’s up to me to make one. To make my life, my story. And you have the same responsibility.

Quotes Referenced in this Episode:

Quote from Art, Inc.: The Essential Guide for Building Your Career as an Artist by Lisa Congdon: “What creates success is that people like you and your story. Some people say, ‘I don’t have a cool story,’ and they are shy about talking about who they are. I say, make one. Make your life your story” (p. 88).

Five Chances for Change:

  1. Share your story any chance you get. You’ll learn what connects with your audience, what can be ignored, where you need to rewrite, and what needs to be added.
  2. Know the genre your story is written in and be willing to change it to something else.
  3. Identify where you are at in the macro and micro structures of your story. Change can come when you embrace change in the introductions, in the dreams, in the conflict, and the resolution.
  4. Identify who you are in your story. Be willing to change who you are and the supporting characters around you.
  5. Accept that negative emotions are a reality of change. You won’t know what they will be, but you can prepare yourself for them by believing that your new story is worth it.
