The Relative Nature of Routine (GWTW402)

An important part of being a creative entrepreneur is embracing and following a daily routine. I talk a lot about it in Getting Work To Work because I’m still figuring out what works best for me. In the latest entry in my routine diary, I add a few thoughts on the relative nature of routines: What worked for someone else might not work for me. Sure, there are plenty of tactics and tips that I can apply, but have I even stopped to consider why or the impact they could have on my work or my family or my health? Should I do away with a task list and instead focus on how I feel? What does productivity look like when I’m less concerned with getting things done and more concerned with feeling a certain way?

Exploring the inner world with questions:

Me: “I need to be more productive.”

Instead of searching for productivity hacks and tips, I can instead explore my inner world for answers:

  1. Why do I need to be more productive?
  2. What is happening in my life or business that leads me to productivity as the solution?
  3. What does my creative process and routine produce?
  4. How do these results satisfy my short- and long-term goals?
  5. What do I really want to express with my creativity?
