Reexamining My Weaknesses (GWTW418)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about myself in 2020, it’s how afraid I’ve been to explore my weaknesses. In the context of work and running a creative business, I understand the importance of leading with my strengths and outsourcing my shortcomings, but what happens when I bring that attitude into every other area of my life? As 2020 continues to unfold, I realize just how important it is to reexamine my weaknesses and not be afraid to engage with what I’ve shoved aside in favor of what comes easily to me. I honestly don’t know what to expect. I do know there’s a richness in this journey when I embrace the contradiction found between strength and weakness.

Quotes mentioned in this episode:

From StrengthsFinder 2.0 by Tom Rath: “Talent (a natural way of thinking, feeling, or behaving) X Investment (time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base) = Strength (the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance.”

From The Promise of Paradox: A Celebration of Contradictions in the Christian Life by Parker J. Palmer: “We educate for life on the surface, not life in the depths.”

Ten Things I’ve Learned From the Reexamination of My Weaknesses:

  1. My ignorance.
  2. My complacency.
  3. My comfort and laziness.
  4. My bias.
  5. My forgetfulness of where I come from, where I am, and where I’m headed.
  6. My fear and arrogance.
  7. The emotions and beliefs that hide in the shadows of my life.
  8. My lack and need for others.
  9. My possibility.
  10. A reminder of how powerful my strengths are.
