I love questions! I think a lot about what questions will engage people, bring forth interesting stories, and create a strong bond between myself and the person I’m talking with. In this episode of Getting Work To Work, I’m going to dive into powerful storytelling questions, how tension is a path to enlightening stories, and why listening transforms the overall interview experience for everyone involved.

Six Types of Powerful Storytelling Questions:

  1. Questions designed to bring forth stories.
    1. What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?
    2. Why did you stop?
    3. How did you get involved in what you do?
    4. Who are your heroes? How do your heroes show up in your work?
  2. Questions of struggle, overcoming odds, and transformation.
    1. What struggle are you immersed in currently?
    2. What is a creative block you are facing?
    3. What’s something you’ve learned about money that you wish you could tell your past self about?
    4. What would your 18 year old self think of who you are today?
  3. Questions of vision and dreams.
    1. What’s something you believe in you would die for?
    2. What change do you want to make in the world?
    3. What big idea are you chasing?
  4. Questions of reflection and learning.
    1. What’s one book or podcast that has blown your mind?
    2. What was the last thing you read that you actually put into action?
    3. What was the last mistake you made and what did you learn?
  5. Going deeper questions.
    1. You mention the phrase, “Creativity & Curiosity Fuel Your Life” a lot. What’s the story behind that?
  6. Embrace questions that reveal tension.
    1. I noticed that when you said that your body language changed briefly, what are you feeling right now?
    2. I sense some tension in the air right now, did I touch a nerve?
