Making Fear Your Friend (GWTW381)

How do you use fear to your advantage instead of letting it control your decisions? I’ve been thinking a lot about fear as I work on a variety of creative projects that are pushing me through and beyond my comfort zone. I’ve wanted all of these growth opportunities, but it seems they come with a healthy side order of fear. Did I make the right choice? What if something goes wrong? What if I drop the ball? What if I can’t do it? My heart races. I want to quit. I want to shrink back to my safe place. Then I remind myself, “push through and grow, you want this.”

Quotes Referenced in this Episode:

From “The Getaway Car” in This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett:

“Forgiveness. The ability to forgive oneself. Stop here for a few breaths and think about this because it is the key to making art, and very possibly the key to finding any semblance of happiness in life” (p. 29).

“I believe, more than anything, that this grief of constantly having to face down our own inadequacies is what keeps people from being writers. Forgiveness, therefore, is key. I can’t write the book I want to write, but I can and will write the book I am capable of writing” (p. 30).

Six ways to counteract fear and use it to your advantage:

  1. Learn and build up competence
  2. Speak truth in confidence and humility
  3. Forgive myself and others
  4. See the humanity in myself and others
  5. Embrace the reality that life is short
  6. Believe that impact is infinite
