Handling Feedback (GWTW240)

Every once in a while, I release a podcast episode that is something I’m thinking about, but not actually acting upon. One example is Episode 198: Self-Assessment and Feedback in which I talk about how to seek feedback. But something I didn’t consider until last week is the subject of today’s episode of Getting Work To Work: Now that you asked people for their feedback and you got it, what do you do with it? How do you process your emotions when you may not like what you hear?

5 Ways to Process and Handle Feedback:

  1. Thank every single person for their feedback.
  2. Don’t give a temper tantrum or be defensive to the person give you the feedback. If you are mad, don’t take it out on them. Process it however you need to do it and then revisit the feedback with a clear mind. It’s not so bad, is it?
  3. Remind yourself why you asked for feedback.
  4. Evaluate what needs to be incorporated now and in the future, and also what can be ignored.
  5. A phrase popped up several times: “feel free to take it or leave it.” Remember, it’s up to you accept or reject all feedback, but don’t be a jerk about it. You don’t need to explain. You don’t need to justify. Make your work better.
